The fans of the Boston Red Sox are really pushing for the front office to acquire a new ace for the pitching staff. The fans cited the fact the starters are actually over-producing, having the seventh best SP ERA in the MLB, with a 3.78. Since August 26th, it has been 2.52. Doing this without a clearcut ace is a little crazy, so here are a few starters the Sox should target to complete their rotation.
Corbin Burnes, Baltimore Orioles RHP
This past season, Burnes has been one of the best pitchers in the American League. Posting a 2.95 ERA, a 15-8 record, and 172 strikeouts, he has been nothing short of dominant.
It has been reported that the Sox have been sniffing around Burnes’ camp to see if he could become the newest member, but nothing official yet. Burnes is probably looking for a contract sum of around $250 million, and the Sox do have the cap space to accommodate him.
Max Fried, Atlanta Braves LHP
Fried is another great option for the Sox, as he has been great with the Braves. A career 3.1 ERA pitcher, he has been dominant in the past couple years.
This season he dropped off a bit ERA wise, with a 3.42, but with some offseason training with Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey, he could bounce back to his prime self.
Fried is also a lefty, which the Sox lack in the pitching department. They have no lefty starters, and only a couple lefty relievers. Fried would definitely add some much needed versatility to the Sox pitching staff.
Shane Bieber, Cleveland Guardians RHP
Bieber has been injured most of the season, undergoing a season-ending surgery for his elbow back in April. However, from his limited starts he looked like he was going to have a monster season.
In his two starts, Bieber maintained a 0.00 ERA, and got 20 strikeouts between the two. This choice is definitely the third option when considering all three listed, as he just didn’t have enough time to show his ability.
If the Red Sox sign or trade for a #1 SP it’ll push everyone into appropriate roles for 2025.

Sox rotation has the 7th best SP ERA this year at 3.78 despite not having a true #1 down the stretch. It’s a 2.52 ERA since August 26.
Sky is the limit if they take that leap of faith. https://t.co/y4rlfFElDf
