The Boston Red Sox have come out and said that star slugger and third baseman Rafael Devers will not need surgery on his shoulder, per Masslive’s Christopher Smith. This comes after Devers was shut down for the rest of the season due his shoulder causing significant issues for him to hit and throw the ball.
In his first 138 games this season, Devers posted a.272/.354/.516/.871 averages, 28 homers, 34 doubles, five triples, 83 RBIs, 87 runs, 67 walks and 147 strikeouts. In the past 42, his hitting dropped unusually low, to .205/.295/.329/.624, with only three extra-base hits since August 18th.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora also commented on Devers’ problems, and how it affected his hitting and throwing.
“You saw the swing. He battled through it. It’s been on and off,” Cora said. “The bat speed was down and I think this is the smart thing to do.”Cora said the velocity on Devers’ throws also recently decreased.
“That one (the right shoulder) goes on and off,” Cora said. “That’s the one in Colorado when he dove. Towards the end, it wasn’t great. You can see the velo, it was going down. He was really good (with arm velo) earlier in the season and then that happened. It went down. But it was more about the left one with the swing.”
The Sox will play without Devers starting today at 12:35pm EST against the Minnesota Twins.
