The New Orleans Saints took a loss in Week 3 while also getting involved in some mid-game drama and post-game trash talk.
Across the board, the Saints seemed to lose their cool while the Philadelphia Eagles marched into town and ruined their undefeated mark. That includes offensive tackle Trevor Penning getting a costly flag.
Said flag, it turns out, resulted in a fine letter from the NFL.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Penning received a $11,255 fine from the NFL for his blocking of Eagles defender Darius Slay into the bench area.
The play was costly well before Penning had to open up his checkbook. The infraction cost the team 15 yards and spoiled a third-down conversion, making things much tougher on the struggling offense on a day it mustered just 12 points.
Penning, a first-round pick in 2022, has turned things around compared to some of that bust-like buzz around him during training camp. But these types of plays that even get the attention of the league office shine brighter than the steadying of his performance so far.
Little control issues like this, in addition to injuries for Taysom Hill and others, explain why the Saints have evened out, losing two in a row and that status as seeming like one of the NFL’s top forces.
