Boston Red Sox Chief of Baseball Operations Craig Breslow went on the 310 to Left show on NESN and talked about the importance of having an ace on the pitching staff. To him, even if a current starter could become the ace, it would be great to have a proven one now.
“We need guys that can start Game 1 of a playoff series, and whether or not (Houck) or Bello or Kutter can become those guys, we’ve seen it in spurts….but there is also value of the guy you just write in as your #1 starter, you know he’s gonna make 30+ starts, he’s gonna give you close to 200 innings, and he’s gonna keep you in every game that he starts.”
The Sox have said they will be aggressive this offseason, and there are plenty of pitchers to choose from. There are also foreign pitchers coming to the MLB, like Tomoyuki Sugano, and possibly Roki Sasaki, both pitchers from Team Japan in the World Baseball Classic.
It seems like the Sox do have a frontrunner, Atlanta Braves’ Max Fried, according to insider sources. Hopefully, the Sox are able to land a stud who can be the guy they put out in game one of the ALCS in years to come.
