Boston Red Sox breakout outfielders Wilyer Abreu and Jarren Duran have been amazing for the Sox this season, being a core part of the offense. However, it seems like one may be sent to a new home, and the other will call Boston home for a while, per Chris Cotillo.
“It’s not hard to envision either Duran or Abreu centering a major trade, especially on the pitching side of things. At the same time, both are early extension candidates.”
The reason the Sox may trade one of these two is due to the fact the team wants to bring up their top prospect, who is also the top in all of baseball, Roman Anthony. They want him to start, so they need to address their surplus of outfielders.
Abreu and Duran both had great seasons. Abreu hit .253/.322/.459/.781 with 15 homers, 33 doubles, and had a possible Gold Glove in right field. Duran slashed .285/.342/.492/.834, with 21 homers, 48 doubles, and 14 triples. He also has a great glove and arguably the best speed in the MLB. Finally, Duran is a finalist for the Hank Aaron award.
The difference between the two are contracts and age. Abreu is 25 and contracted through 2029, and is projected to make $780k this season. Duran is 27 and controlled through 2028, and he is projected to make $4.9 million since this is his arbitration year.
Given the two players, Abreu may be the one to be shipped off. He is younger and has more control, which makes other teams have to give up something good for him.
Hopefully, if the Sox do go through with this, they get a star reliever in return.
