Now that the Boston Red Sox are officially eliminated from playoff contention, Chief of Baseball Operations Craig Breslow is looking to the offseason via Alex Speier. Specifically, he is ready to make trades a priority to bring in new talent.
“We have seen the ability to be competitive in the AL East with a young group that’s really exciting, really dynamic. We’ve got to figure out what the right pieces are to add to that… I think it’s likely some of that comes via trade, because there’s only so many middle infielders and left handed hitting outfielders we can play at any given time.”
The Sox do have a surplus of middle infielders, in Vaughn Grissom, Ceddanne Rafaela, Nick Sogard, Trevor Story, Emmanuel Valdez, and all the other utility players who can play middle infield.
They also have a ton of lefty hitters, in Wilyer Abreu, Triston Casas, Jarren Duran, Rafael Devers, Valdez, and Masataka Yoshida.
So when it comes to trade, there are three players the Sox need to make sure are off limits; Casas, Devers, and Duran. Those three are the heart of the Red Sox offense, and the team needs to be built around them.
That leaves players like Abreu and Yoshida to be trade targets. If they can, the Sox should try to upgrade their bullpen with some stud relievers for them, and sign a starting pitcher that will be the ace in free agency. Possible targets for an ace include Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, and Shane Bieber.
If the Sox are able to keep those three non-tradables, add an ace, and upgrade the bullpen, the Sox will be playoff contenders.
