In an interview with Rob Bradford on the Baseball isn’t Boring podcast, Boston Red Sox Chief of Baseball Operations Craig Breslow said the team needs to rebuild the bullpen. The pen was in the bottom 10 in the MLB this past season.
The bullpen finished with a 4.93 ERA this season, and it was even worse in the second half of the season. From the All-Star Break to mid-August, the bullpen had the worst ERA in the MLB, a 6.93 ERA.
The Sox’s bullpen got a little better in the last month with the call-ups of Zach Penrod and Luis Guerrero, but the old guard did not perform as well as they did last year.
Both Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin, who were dominant last year, had ERAs in the threes. The fifth inning and sixth inning relievers constantly got blown up ruining what the starter had done.
If the Sox rebuild their bullpen, they need to rebuild around Guerrero, Penrod, Justin Slaten, and Liam Hendriks. The rest of the guys need to be let go or traded, as they are not that good or are starting to decline.
