The Boston Red Sox designated fan favorite Dom Smith for assignment today, causing an uproar among fans. Many wanted to keep the big lefty, and instead give Bobby Dalbec the boot.
Smith was a great pickup for the time that Triston Casas was injured. He hit .237 with six homers and 20 doubles. Smith also had a great glove, and made a bunch of good defensive plays at first.
With Casas returning, it made sense Smith had to go somewhere. By DFA’ing Smith, it gives him the option to play for another contender that needs his skillset. He also has the choice to join the Sox’s minor league team if he gets no offers.
However, some fans would rather have Bobby Dalbec get the DFA instead of Smith. Dalbec was a young phenom, where in his first two seasons he had 33 home runs in 156 games. After that, he’s stunk. He is only hitting .133 this season, and has spent most of his time in the minors.
Could’ve easily DFA’d Bobby Dalbec and optioned someone instead of cutting a big clubhouse presence imo.

Not a fan of this.
Good luck to Smith, and here’s hoping he finds a team that needs him. Or, he’ll make his way back onto the Red Sox roster.
If Casas re-injures his ribs and I have to watch Bobby Dalbec again I will [REDACTED] Craig Breslow with my bare hands https://t.co/Plv8ZjSkfB
