Boston Red Sox fans are proposing a mock trade with the St. Louis Cardinals for starting pitcher Sonny Gray. This is due to former Red Sox CBO Chaim Bloom becoming the president of the Cardinals organization yesterday. Bloom, who knows the ins and outs of the Sox farm and organization, would make a fair trade.
Gray is a decent pitcher, and could be a viable addition to the rotation, just not the ace. This season, Gray had a 3.84 ERA, 13-9 record, and 203 strikeouts.
Gray would probably take Nick Pivetta’s spot in the rotation if he leaves. The Sox would also make someone like Kutter Crawford the main part of the trade, and maybe add a prospect or cash considerations to the deal. They need to trade someone on the roster to keep a spot open for a potential ace.
This can’t be the main starting pitching trade the Sox make though. They need to go after someone really good, like Corbin Burnes, or Max Fried. The Sox need a true ace so their pitching staff doesn’t keep overworking themselves.
Will the Sox attempt a trade for Gray? Maybe, but probably not. If they do go shopping, they are looking for an ace, who can lead the team to the playoffs.
