Boston Red Sox reliever and set-up man/closer Chris Martin is willing to return to the Sox if they want him, per Alex Speier. Martin’s willingness to return is driven by his belief that the Sox will be playoff contenders next season.
This season, Martin had a bit of an off year, but still decent. He posted a 3.45 ERA over 45 games with 50 strikeouts.
Martin also was injured for a portion of the season, so he might have had even more strikeouts and a somewhat better or worse ERA.
If the Sox brought him back, that would be huge. Martin along with pitching coach Andrew Bailey would be good mentors for the younger pitchers.
Martin also had an amazing year last year. He had a 1.05 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 55 games. If he could return to half of his former self, he would be a great arm in the bullpen.
If the Sox decide not to bring him back that is also ok. Martin is older, turning 39 next season, and probably does not have a lot of baseball left in him.
However, they probably should. He has proven to be a good pitcher, and he can be a teacher for the younger guys.
