The Seattle Seahawks may look like a juggernaut right now after starting out the season 3-0, but this team is still coming together and there's a lot of room for improvement. That's especially true on the offensive side of the ball, which has been inconsistent thus far in 2024. While the defense has consistently shut down opposing quarterbacks, the offense hasn't been able to capitalize on all the opportunities they've been given.
Nobody knows better that there's a lot of points and yards being left on the field than the guys out there. Starting quarterback Geno Smith admitted to reporters that he was "really pissed off" with himself for his performance in Sunday's 24-3 win over the Miami Dolphins. Star wide receiver DK Metcalf was also unsatisfied, even though he finished with a game-high 104 yards and a touchdown.
Here's what DK had to say after the game about what was an ugly victory, according to Seahawks beat reporter John Boyle at the team website.
DK Metcalf's message to the Seahawks
"If we didn't win, we would have had a sour taste in our mouth after the second and third quarter that we had out there. Winning takes care of a lot of mistakes, but you can't overlook them or sweep them under the rug. You've got to be professionals and be the type of team that fixes those mistakes and moves on and improves throughout the season."
Metcalf has it right and the biggest mistakes happening right now are mostly in pass protection. Left tackle Charles Cross is playing splendidly, but unfortunately the rest of the offensive line is far behind. In particular, starting guards Laken Tomlinson and Anthony Bradford have been liabilities when it comes to keeping Geno Smith clean in the pocket. The revolving door at right tackle hasn't been much better and center Connor Williams has yet to really get going, either.
While it's only been three games, it's clear Seattle has an elite defense this year and it could be good enough to carry them to a deep playoff run. The Seahawks either have to try to upgrade their personnel in the trenches on the other side of the ball or find ways to get Smith on the move a lot more, otherwise they might spoil an unexpected shot to play in another Super Bowl.
