Just how good are Mike Macdonald and the Seattle Seahawks on defense this year? If you have already been comparing them to the all-time great Steel Curtain teams of the 1970s Pittsburgh Steelers, then you pretty much hit the bullseye. On Sunday the Seahawks squeezed the Miami Dolphins into a dominant 24-3 win despite getting an off game from Geno Smith and missing multiple starters on both sides of the ball.
Seattle now stands with a 3-0 record, and in those three wins they have managed to hold their opponents under 150 total passing yards. According to senior NFL researcher Dante Koplowitz-Fleming that makes them the first team to do so since the 1979 Pittsburgh Steelers.
That's not the only record that the Seahawks set in Sunday's win, either. Last week Macdonald made franchise history by becoming the first rookie head coach to start a season 2-0. Now he's the first coach period in team history to start the year with a 3-0 record.
Seattle's defense currently ranks second in fewest yards allowed per game, fourth in scoring defense and second in defensive DVOA to the Minnesota Vikings, who appear to be the early heavyweights in the NFC with the San Francisco 49ers faltering so far.
