Geno Smith represents the best chance for the Seattle Seahawks to win a Super Bowl over the next couple of years. However, you should never stop searching for your next potential franchise quarterback, no matter how good your current one may be. That's how the Green Bay Packers have enjoyed a high level of QB play for 30 years running now and how general manager John Schneider (who came up at Green Bay) says he wants to run things.
However, in practice the Seahawks have avoided adding rookie quarterbacks like the plague. Since Russell Wilson's arrival in 2012 they have only drafted one, which was a seventh-round draft pick and not a legitimate attempt to land a future franchise starter. Everyone from Geno Smith to Drew Lock to Sam Howell has had at least one entire season of experience starting in the NFL before coming to Seattle.
At some point that will have to change though, and the folks at Bleacher Report think it will come in the 2025 NFL draft. Their most recent team needs column predicts that the Seahawks pick Miami (FL) quarterback Cam Ward, formerly of Washington State fame. Here's what they shared.
B/R on Seahawks drafting Cam Ward
"Geno Smith turns 34 next month and only has one more season left on his contract after this one. So, Schneider would be wise to at least look into drafting a quarterback of the future, and he'd be hard-pressed to find someone who's having a better season so far in 2024 than the Hurricane... 'His control of the Hurricanes offense is evident on film. Ward is playing with impressive calmness and poise in the pocket. He is making great throws with accuracy, ball placement, and arm talent that is not easily found in college football.'"
Ward (6-foot-2, 223 pounds) is off to an admittedly hot start, and you wouldn't be wrong if you noticed the similarities between Bleacher Report's description of his game and how Geno Smith currently operates Ryan Grubb's offense.
Through just five games Ward is already up to 1,782 passing yards, 18 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 92.7 QBR that ranks second in the nation. For an encore Ward has added another 146 yards and two scores as a rusher.
Why Cam Ward to Seahawks won't happen
While it's always fun to think about adding an exciting young quarterback to the roster, it seems like a long shot that Seattle would get hooked up with Ward, who is bound to be a first-round draft pick and will likely go top-10 overall. This Seahawks team is simply too good this year to land a pick that high in the 2025 draft. If Schneider wants to bring in a QB to push Smith next year, he'll probably have to look elsewhere.
