The Detroit Lions saw a plethora of injuries to key players last week in the 20-13 win over the Arizona Cardinals, and center Frank Ragnow was among them.
Ragnow is dealing with a partially torn pectoral muscle that will sideline him for at least this week against the Seattle Seahawks, head coach Dan Campbell revealed on Thursday. It's the right move for Detroit, as injuring his pec further could lead to Ragnow missing the rest of the season.
"We’re going to put Frank down this week," Campbell said, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "So I’ll go ahead and get that out of the way. We can go round and round if we want. We’re not going to mess with that. Look, Frank’s tough. I mean, he’s as tough as nails. If anybody can play through it, it’s him. I think we got to be smart. It’s early in the year. We got a lot of football left."
So, how will the Lions fill the void? They haven't confirmed what they plan on doing yet, but there are a few educated guesses we could make.
The first involves the Lions moving left guard Graham Glasgow to center, where he has plenty of experience. That would leave either Michael Niese or Kayode Awosika as the left guard in place of Glasgow.
The other option is to leave Glasgow at left guard and put Niese, who is listed as the team's backup center on the depth chart, in for Ragnow. That would allow the Lions to only change one starter upfront, as opposed to two.
But Niese has almost no experience in the NFL. He's only played 12 snaps during his career, with just one of those coming on offense and the other 11 on special teams. Awosika has 29 games, five starts and 451 offensive snaps under his belt.
The Lions have until Monday to decide, but if we had to guess, Detroit will opt for Awosika's experience at left guard and shift Glasgow over to center.
