The Boston Red Sox have been busy in recent days, trading for James Paxton from the Los Angeles Dodgers and Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays.
However, they're not done yet.
According to MassLive's Chris Cotillo, the Red Sox are designating catcher Reese McGuire for assignment and have claimed reliever Yohan Ramirez off of waivers.
McGuire, 29, was traded to Boston for Jake Diekman back in 2022. This year, he's hit .209 with a .575 OPS, three home runs, 18 RBIs and three stolen bases.
Ramirez, 29, was originally signed as an international free agent back in 2016 by the Houston Astros. He was snagged by the Seattle Mariners in the 2019 Rule 5 draft and traded to the Cleveland Guardians in 2022 and then again to the Pittsburgh Pirates later that same year. Since then, he's spent time with the Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles and Dodgers.
In 2024, Ramirez had posted a 5.98 ERA (4.18 FIP) and 1.466 WHIP while striking out 27 batters.
McGuire was not really needed on the roster with Jansen and Connor Wong expected to split opportunities going forward. Ramirez appears to be taking Chase Anderson's spot in the bullpen after the former was designated for assignment himself.
