The Boston Red Sox made a trade on Saturday, acquiring catcher Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen for prospects Cutter Coffey (No. 28 on SoxProspects), Eddinson Paulino (No. 15) and Gilberto Batista (unranked).
Jansen joins Connor Wong and Reese McGuire as Boston's group of catchers. It's currently unknown exactly how the opportunities will be split or if another move is coming.
After the trade, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow spoke with MLB.com's Ian Browne about the move.
"Danny gives us a right-handed bat that should play very well at Fenway," Breslow said. "He hits the ball really hard and in the air, which is especially advantageous in our ballpark. We liked our catching situation coming into the deadline but saw an opportunity to strengthen that group."
Red Sox manager Alex Cora also appeared to be happy with the move.
"He has hit the ball hard vs. us for a while. He likes hitting here. Pull side fly balls. He has been solid," Cora said (via. Chris Cotillo). "Got some texts from teammates and (Blue Jays manager John Schneider) saying he's a good kid that likes to work. We like the swing."
It will be interesting to see what Breslow, Cora and company at catcher over the next few days.
