The Olympic games are just around the corner with Paris hosting the prestigious and legendary event in a few days. The Indian contingent travelling to Paris will be carrying the dream of over a billion people on their shoulders and will be keen on giving their best performance representing the tri-colour.

Neeraj Chopra’s gold medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the Men's Javelin throw is a memory still etched in every Indian’s heart. Chopra will be featured in Paris as well and will be looking forward to repeating a similar feat from three years ago. 

Apart from Neeraj, there are other athletes who are strong medal contenders and have the potential to go all the way in their respective events and categories. 

Top medal contenders from India at the Paris Olympics

Neeraj Chopra - Javelin throw

Since his famous 87.58-meter throw to bag the Gold in Tokyo, Neeraj will be eyeing the gold once again, this time in Paris. Neeraj has had his fair share of struggles with injuries but has managed to make a strong comeback in recent months. The reigning world champion in men’s javelin throw will be India’s biggest hope to win the gold once again.

Vinesh Phogat - Wrestling 

Vinesh Phogat is in peak shape and will be a top contender for a medal at the Paris Olympics. Phogat bowed out in the quarter-final of the 53 kg category in Tokyo but managed to make a great comeback by winning gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham a year later. After her recent controversies with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the 29-year-old will be determined to prove all the critics wrong.

PV Sindhu - Badminton 

Two-time Olympic medalist, PV Sindhu will be representing the Indian tri-colour once again at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 29-year-old first made the headlines in 2016 after becoming the second-only Indian to finish at the podium in the Olympics in Badminton. Sindhu won the silver medal in Rio 2016, repeating a similar feat in Paris once again by bagging the bronze. 

Sindhu is currently seeded 10th and will be eyeing a third consecutive Olympic medal in Paris. 

Mirabai Chanu - Weightlifting

India hasn’t produced many weightlifters over the years so when Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, it became a huge headline. Earlier in 2017, she had bagged gold at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships. In 2022, she once again won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Considering Chanu’s recent success and her pedigree in weightlifting, she would be a strong title contender to win a medal at the Paris Olympics. 

Aman Sehrawat - Wrestling 

Apart from Phogat, Aman Sehrawat is another medal contender in the wrestling category. The current Asian Champion is the only male representee from the Indian wrestling contingent who will be competing at the Paris Olympics. Sehrawat is just 21 years old and will be competing in his first ever Olympics.

Nikhat Zareen - Boxing

Being a two-time world champion, who had not only won the gold medal at the World Boxing championships in 2022, but also successfully defended her title in 2023, Nikhat Zareen is not only one of the in-form boxers but also a favourite to bring back a medal for India at the Paris Olympics.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty - Badminton men's doubles

The duo of Satwik-Chirag, ranked third in the world, are one of the biggest hopes for an Olympic medal at the Paris 2024. The pair have been in brilliant form this year, having reached four finals and finished runners up in the Malaysia Open and India Open, while emerging winners at the French Open and the Thailand Open.

Indian Men's Hockey team 

Led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, and with veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh between the sticks, the Indian hockey team has a perfect blend of experienced players and promising young talents, who will fight for the top honours at the Paris Olympics 2024.

The team has been on an impressive run of form after having won the Bronze medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Since then, they have won a Silver medal at the Commonwealth games in 2022 and won both the Asian Champions trophy and Asian Games titles in 2023.
