Vinesh Phogat will lead the Indian wrestling contingent at the 2024 Paris Olympics, which begin on July 26.

Wrestling has been the second-most successful sport for India at the Summer Games, after hockey, as it has accounted for seven medals. Wrestler KD Jadhav bagged India's first individual medal at the Olympics when he clinched bronze at the 1952 Helsinki Games. In the 21st century, India has won at least one medal is wrestling since the 2008 Beijing Games, when Sushil Kumar returned with a bronze.

India’s wrestlers have been medal contenders representing the tri-colour at the grandest stage of them all with a similar case once again.

Indian wrestling squad for Paris 2024

A total of six wrestlers will be competing in wrestling at the Paris Olympics 2024. While all of them are competing in freestyle, only one men's player was able to secure qualification.

  • Vinesh Phogat: Women's 50 kg
  • Anshu Malik: Women's 57 kg
  • Nisha Dahiya: Women's 68 kg
  • Reetika Hooda: Women's 76 kg
  • Antim Phangal: Women's 53 kg

India’s Women’s team boasts an incredible squad including the two-time bronze medal winner at World Championships Phogat. She will be competing in the 50 kg category. 

Anshu Malik is another medal contender for the Indians. She won the silver medal at the World Championship in 2021. She will be competing in the 57 kg weight category. 

22-year-old Reetika Hooda will be competing in the 76 kg weight category. She secured the bronze medal in the Asian Championships in 2023.

Antim Panghal, Aman Sehrawat seeded at Paris Olympics 2024

For the first time in history, seedings have been incorporated in Olympic wrestling events.

Antim Phangal who is seeded fourth will be competing in the 53 kg weight category. She is the only seeded women wrestler from the Indian squad alongside India’s only male wrestler to compete in the Olympics this year, Aman Sehrawat. Sehrawat will be competing in the 57 kg weight category and is seeded sixth according to the rankings. 

Panghal will be seeded in the top half of the draw alongside first placed Lucia Guzman of Ecuador, fifth-seeded Maria Prevolarki and eighth-seeded Andreea Ana. This results in Indian grappler avoiding the likes of second-seeded Emma Malmgren, third-placed Akari Fujinami, sixth-seeded Christiana Ogunsanya and seventh-seeded Qianyu Pang before the final rounds.

Phangal had recently lost to Emma in the Budapest Rankings series and Akari in the Asian Games and Asian Championships. 

On the other hand, Sehrawat has been placed in the bottom half of the draw and will have the likes of the reigning world champion, Stevan Micic, Meirambek Kartbay, etc. placed in the top half of the draw. 

The other four unseeded wrestlers from the Indian contingent will be drawn randomly into brackets a day before the events commence.
