Assuming Russell Wilson will be healthy enough to play in Week 4, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be faced with a decision at the quarterback position between Wilson and Justin Fields.
Of course, Wilson, who was named the starter going into the season, has missed the first three games of the 2024 season due to a calf injury. However, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the veteran signal-caller is expected to resume practicing this week.
With Wilson out, the Steelers have rolled with Fields and have gotten off to a 3-0 start with him under center. Fields hasn't lit the world on fire by any stretch, but he has done enough to get the Steelers to this point thanks to the defense and is coming off his best game of the campaign in Week 3.
There has been no shortage of speculation about what the Steelers will do, and that speculation has leaned more and more toward the side of Fields keeping the job, even when Wilson is healthy enough to play.
But based on the team's latest depth chart released on Tuesday, Wilson remains in the top spot at quarterback, with Fields behind him. It's very possible the Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin are just playing it close to the vest, but the depth chart is worth noting, nonetheless.
When addressing the media on Tuesday, Tomlin said the team is in the same place with Wilson as it was last week and the veteran quarterback will be limited at practice on Wednesday.
"Still very much in the same place with Russ," Tomlin said, per Joe Rutter of Trib Live. "I want Justin to be singularly focused on starting for us."
If nothing else, the depth chart shows us that the Steelers still aren't all-in on Fields keeping the job once Wilson is healthy. But based on the start to the week Wilson is having, they may not have to make a decision at the position for another week.
