Pete Prisco has surprising take on Eagles vs. Packers in NFL Week 1 image

The Philadelphia Eagles enter their neutral-site, regular-season opener against Green Bay as favorites. But are the Eagles a good bet to take down star quarterback Jordan Love and the Packers on Friday night in Brazil?

Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com released his Week 1 picks for the 2024 season, and as you might expect, he’s favoring several underdogs in what is often the most unpredictable slate of the NFL calendar.

Prisco included the Eagles among teams on upset alert. Here was his reasoning and score prediction:

This first-ever NFL game in Brazil features two of the better teams in the NFL. The Packers found out Jordan Love could be their guy last season, and I think that will continue here. The Eagles have shored up their secondary, but they were terrible against the pass last year. Packers take it as Love has a big night and the attacking new-look defense of the Packers plays well enough.

Pick: Packers 33, Eagles 28

The Eagles are a difficult team to predict entering the 2024 season. They came a play or two shy of winning the Super Bowl in 2022. And while the ending last season was ugly, with losses to backup QB Drew Lock and the Seattle Seahawks, as well as a bad Arizona Cardinals team at home down the stretch, the Eagles did secure close wins over the Chiefs, Bills and Cowboys in 2023.

Will Brinson, another writer for CBS Sports, recently published his 2024 NFL season win-loss record predictions, and he picked the Eagles to go a middling 9-8 after a sluggish start. ESPN’s Seth Walder, in his 2024 NFL season simulation, had the Eagles surging for the NFC East division title, but he too predicted a slow start at 6-6 entering the final month of the regular season.

With a revamped lineup at multiple position groups, and a pair of new big-name coordinators installing new systems this summer, the Eagles have a ton of question marks entering the new season. Couple that with a rising star in Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love, and a young Packers roster on the upswing, and the Eagles are an easy fade for most NFL analysts in Week 1.
