The Philadelphia Eagles have a number of veteran players on the roster bubble entering the final weekend of the preseason. One name in particular has been involved in NFL trade fodder throughout the summer.
NFL analyst Cody Benjamin of CBSSports.com had a different take on what the Eagles could do with former All-Pro corner-turned-safety James Bradberry.
Benjamin predicted six potential big-name cuts prior to the NFL’s 53-man roster deadline, and Bradberry was among the players mentioned. Here was Benjamin’s reasoning:
Two years removed from an All-Pro showing as a perimeter cover man for a Super Bowl contender, Bradberry has been trying a transition to safety after the Eagles crowded their cornerback spot with new, young talent. Philadelphia wouldn't save anything by bidding farewell, but the aging veteran may prefer one final shot at an outside corner job in another city, and the Eagles have rookies they want to debut.
Bradberry would likely prefer the opportunity to sign elsewhere as a cornerback, especially after running with the Eagles’ backup safeties throughout training camp. But what complicates things here is the three-year, $38 million contract Bradberry signed with the team in March of 2022. In this scenario, the Eagles would be on the hook for some guaranteed money this year ($1.2 million), and would also have to eat $15 million in total dead money that can be spread out between 2024 and 2025, per Over the Cap.
The complicated contract situation is why Bradberry has been such a popular name in hypothetical trade proposals, especially post-June 1. Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report recently reviewed one player each NFL team should put on the trade block, and he tabbed Bradberry as the most likely Eagles player to be shipped out.
A trade could still be in play. The Eagles just swung a deal with Washington for WR Jahan Dotson. Maybe general manager Howie Roseman isn’t done.
Or maybe Bradberry’s contract saves him when cut-down day arrives on Aug. 27.
