According to one NFL analyst, Howie Roseman has done it again.

The Philadelphia Eagles swung a trade with the Washington Commanders Thursday for underachieving wide receiver Jahan Dotson. Roseman is already being lauded for the low-risk, high-reward move.

The Eagles reportedly sent a third-round pick and a pair of seventh-rounders to the Commanders in exchange for Dotson and a fifth-round pick. Jared Dubin of CBSSports.com sees that as a bargain price for a player the Commanders drafted No. 16 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Dubin graded both sides of the trade, giving the Eagles a B:

“It's not like the Eagles are really getting a sure thing to be their No. 3 wide receiver,” Dubin wrote. “Again, Dotson has not been all that productive in the NFL, even if he was good enough in college to be a mid-first-rounder. The cost to acquire him is so low, though, that the deal is a solid one even allowing for the possibility that he can't fill a real role in the offense.”

Dotson is coming off a down year, finishing with 49 receptions for 518 yards and four touchdowns. Per ESPN’s Tim McManus, Dotson had the 10th highest drop percentage in the NFL in 2023.

What Dotson hasn’t had in his career is a quarterback as good as Jalen Hurts. Former head coach Ron Rivera benched QB Sam Howell for Jacoby Brissett towards the end of the 2023 regular season. Dotson’s rookie year was a smattering of Howell, Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke. Better quarterback play and a change of scenery could help Dotson live up to his potential in Philly.

With Washington, there were other factors at play beyond Dotson’s lack of production on the field. Still, Dubin doesn’t see the value in unloading Dotson for what amounts to a pick swap.

“There's no way to frame this as anything other than a loss for Washington,” wrote Dubin, who gave the Commanders a D- in the trade. “Dotson was a first-round pick just two years ago and he played two underwhelming seasons for the team, but he also didn't get an opportunity to play with a good quarterback during that time. To essentially get only a pick swap and a couple of seventh-rounders for him is a pretty big disappointment.”
