Patriots coach Jerod Mayo clarifies Drake Maye's role heading into his rookie season image

Last week, the New England Patriots announced that veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett beat out rookie first-round pick Drake Maye for the team's starting job in 2024.

The move gives Maye more time to adjust to life in the NFL, the playbook and gameday operations.

However, Maye might not be on the bench for long, as during Mayo's media availability on Monday, he clarified that if Brissett were to go down with an injury, as he did during the final preseason game, the rookie would take over.

"For me, any rookie quarterback, or a rookie in general, it's tough to come in this league and play at a high level. Look, when we talk about developing a guy like Drake Maye, that is a continuous process," Mayo said. "If Jacoby was to get injured in the first week, 1000% Drake would be the next guy in as the No. 2 QB on the roster."

It's interesting that New England would be confident in making Maye the starter in Week 1 due to injury, but they're not confident enough to make him the starter regardless. That would speak to their faith in Brissett and also where Maye is in his development.

If they didn't feel comfortable with Maye sliding in, they probably would've signed another veteran to their roster or practice squad to step in if needed.
