The New England Patriots are in a new era, with Jerod Mayo taking over for Bill Belichick as the team's head coach after 24 seasons.
With that, there are a lot of responsibilities that fall on Mayo's shoulders that have nothing to do with the play on the field each week, including naming team captains.
Earlier in the offseason, Mayo stated that he wasn't a fan of having a big group of captains, and during the preseason he didn't send a ton of players out for the coin toss.
However, on Monday, Mayo announced his team's captains for the 2024 season, and the group is made up of six proven leaders, representing all three phases of the game.
New England's 2024 captains include center David Andrews, quarterback Jacoby Brissett, defensive lineman Deatrich Wise, linebacker Ja'Whaun Bentley, safety Jabrill Peppers and long snapper Joe Cardona.
This is the first time that both Peppers and Cardona have received the honor.
Mayo made it known that these choices were made by the team, and that's a great precedent to set.
