The New York Jets held a 6-0 lead over the Denver Broncos at halftime, but there was nothing pretty about it.
Under a rainy, gloomy sky, both offenses experienced difficulty moving the football, and the Jets made matters even harder through self-inflicted mistakes.
The Jets committed seven first-half penalties, including multiple drive-killers. Gang Green's lack of discipline resulted in more penalties than first downs recorded. The Jets moved the chains only six times over the first two quarters.
Over the opening 15 minutes, New York registered only one first down, which came as a result of a defensive pass interference penalty. The Jets netted 15 yards, accounted for an 0-for-4 clip on third down and had three accepted penalties against them.
In particular, the pre-snap penalties proved most costly.
Backed up in their own territory on their second offensive possession, the Jets committed two false starts and were forced to punt from the 1-yard line.
The pre-snap problems continued later in the half at the opposite end of the field.
With New York looking to punch one into the end zone on fourth down from the 1-yard line, left guard John Simpson committed a false start, causing the team to settle for a field goal.
On an earlier possession, left tackle Tyron Smith jumped early. It turned a 3rd-and-3 into a 3rd-and-8 and led to a three-and-out.
The Jets' offensive line also surrendered three sacks as the team totaled 101 yards in the first half.
