New York Jets' wide receiver Garrett Wilson is an emerging star, but the Denver Broncos' top cornerback may be better.
Coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard receiving seasons, Wilson has gotten off to somewhat of a slow start with quarterback Aaron Rodgers but the WR1 threat has opened opportunities for others to eat. It won't get any easier in Week 4, however, as highly-touted CB1 Patrick Surtain II will likely cover Wilson for most of the day when the Jets entertain the Broncos on September 29 at MetLife Stadium.
Surtain recently received a mega contract extension that carries a $24 million average annual value. Opponents have targeted the 2021 first-round draft pick only seven times in pass coverage through three games and he has not allowed a touchdown. He picked off a pass in last year's home game against New York, which triumphed 31-21.
The Sporting News expert panel, consisting of Vinnie Iyer, Michael O'Hara and Ed Williams, identified potential fantasy football busts in Week 4 at each position and one of the three pundits chose Wilson for the wide receiver discussion. In addition to Wilson, New Orleans Saints WR Rashid Shaheed and Baltimore Ravens WR Zay Flowers were listed as probable fantasy disappointments this week.
Wilson, who has secured 15 of 26 targets for 150 yards and one touchdown over the first three weeks, is seemingly embracing the challenge that awaits in Week 4.
"I love it. As long as we don't crown them before the game and we still take some chances at them, I love it," said Wilson on Friday in Florham Park.
From Fantasy Football Busts Week 4: Jordan Love, Garrett Wilson, Rachaad White among potential underperformers
Garrett Wilson, New York Jets: You don't have to do a deep dive into advanced metrics to come to the conclusion that it is difficult to feel comfortable starting No. 1 receivers against the Denver Broncos. Why? Talented receivers draw shadow coverage from Pat Surtain, one of the best corners in the NFL. Surtain has squared off with DK Metcalf, George Pickens, and Mike Evans so far this season. He has held that trio to 53 receiving yards... combined. Aaron Rodgers may have to look for production elsewhere in Week 4. — Michael O'Hara
Rodgers, who explained what makes Surtain so special, sounded excited for the matchup.
"Pat's a phenomenal player. Garrett is, too. It's gonna be a good matchup, those two guys," said Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP.
Don't forget to set your lineups early as the Jets and Broncos kick off at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday in East Rutherford.
