Sometimes, fans can see how bad things are for an NFL team through its off-field actions.

That has never been truer than with the New Orleans Saints right now.

Those Saints just found out that Pro Bowl offensive lineman Erik McCoy will miss six to eight weeks after suffering a groin injury that will require surgery

The Saints responded by essentially hosting an entirely new offensive line on tryouts this week. Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reported that the team worked out center Brian Allen, tackle Gottlieb Ayedze, tackle Andrew Coker, guard Chris Reed and guard Josh Sills.

See? No exaggeration there.

The offensive line has been a disaster zone of injuries for the Saints. Lucas Patrick, one of the best options to fill in for McCoy, is already starting at left guard. That leaves Udoh or Landon Young as the best options.

These issues started well before the season, too, with tackle Ryan Ramczyk going to reserve lists in July, leading to a trial by fire for first-round products Trevor Penning and Taliese Fuaga.

Now, the Saints must dramatically reshuffle the lineup in front of Derek Carr again. It comes at a precarious time, too, after the offense’s first bad showing of the year in a loss. If the play in the trenches can’t remain at least somewhat consistent, possible shootouts with Atlanta and Kansas City could turn sour quickly.
