The Minnesota Vikings might not have T.J. Hockenson to start the year and they have brought in some depth by signing tight end Robert Tonyan. The move was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler.
The depth at tight end is okay but leaves a little to be desired. Johnny Mundt is set to take Hockenson's role in the offense with Josh Oliver to continue in his role as TE2 and the blocking savant. Nick Muse is still developing as the third tight end and they have Sammis Reyes under contract through the International Pathway Program.
Tonyan spent his first five seasons with the Green Bay Packers and the 2023 season with the Chicago Bears. Over his career, Tonyan has 148 receptions for 1,549 yards and 17 touchdowns, including 11 touchdowns during his breakout season in 2020. Tonyan suffered a torn ACL in 2021 which has impacted his past two seasons.
Tonyan is good receiving weapon that could realistically be a contributor early on if he earns a roster spot.
