The latest on the Odell Beckham Jr. injury saga for the Miami Dolphins follows the same theme as usual—mysterious.

All fans know in the wake of final cuts is that Beckham will start the year on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and miss the first four games of the season.

Otherwise, even a recent interview with Dolphins general manager Chris Grier didn’t shed much light on the situation.

Specifically, reporters asked Grier if the Dolphins knew about Beckham’s “procedure” that would put his Week 1 status in jeopardy.

“Yes,” Grier said. “I appreciate the question, but I don’t like to talk about people’s medical history.”

Grier also suggested that the team made the PUP decision and that Beckham didn’t necessarily agree: “We were very hopeful that [his return] would be around Week 1 here, and to be honest with you guys, we put him down. He did not want to go down. He feels he is very close. You guys have seen glimpses of him running around outside doing stuff. He’s very close.”

Close or not, Beckham has yet to practice with the Dolphins at all since signing his one-year deal, which as Tua Tagovailoa put it, makes it hard to see how he fits in the offense. It also might jeopardize the incentives-heavy deal he signed.

Even worse, the vague updates en route to the PUP come at a bad time as Tagovailoa’s offense missed and might continue to miss both Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle due to minor setbacks, too. Another wideout, River Cracraft, went to short-term injured reserve due to an injury suffered in preseason action.

As for Beckham, who sparred with fans on social media about his injury recently, he’ll need to ramp up and work on timing midseason with Tagovailoa now after the summer’s strange injury saga.
