The Dallas Cowboys checked a big box on their to-do list when they signed All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a massive four-year, $136 million contract.
And while that was absolutely the smart thing to do, it doesn't solve all of their looming problems. Quarterback Dak Prescott is still without a long-term deal, and it looks as if he will play out this season on the final year of his current deal and test the free agent market next March. And while he is expected to set records with his eventual contract, many agents around the league have differing opinions on what he should get.
In a survey for The Athletic, Ben Standig talked to several NFL agents to gauge their thoughts on Prescott and the eventual deal he will land, and the results were surprising.
One agent blames Jerry Jones for the debacle.
"The Cowboys got themselves into a mess," the agent said. "That's what happens when the owner gets too involved and becomes friends with the players. I wouldn't pay Dak $60 million per year, and they can't make all three guys (Lamb, Dak, Micah Parsons) the highest paid at their respective positions."
Another agent hinted that the Cowboys are behind the rest of the league with how they run their franchise, especially in free agency,
"The Cowboys don't have any hierarchy," the agent said. "Always a day late and a dollar short in free agency. You have to go through 30 layers of bureaucratic process to get anything done - and you know why."
Another agent said he would be shocked if Jones didn't pay Dak.
"I can't imagine Jerry letting him go."
Dak will certainly have a large pool of teams willing to give him somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 million per year. It will all come down to if Dallas can match it, and if Dak wants to remain a Cowboy.
