It's been roughly one week since the Boston Red Sox activated first baseman Triston Casas from the injured list after torn cartilage in his ribs cost him about four months of playing time in 2024.
In the six games since his return, Casas has hit .391 with a 1.003 OPS, one home run and four RBIs, and he's been a major reason why the Red Sox have won the last two series against two playoff teams (the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros).
The 24-year-old isn't just showing up and doing his job. He's caring about his position and the role he's playing on this year's team.
“I try to have the at-bats that the first baseman for the Boston Red Sox would have,” Casas said after Tuesday's win (via. MassLive). “I take pride in that title and I don’t take it for granted. I don’t take it lightly. I try to come out and prove every single day that I deserve that spot. Getting on base, hitting for power, getting hits. That’s a part of that job. Those are the requirements for that position so that’s what I want to do for a really long time. It takes proving it every day to establish that.”
Before Casas' return, Boston was relying on Dominic Smith to hold down first base most nights, and he was on a hot stretch of his own at that time, so it's been great that they haven't skipped a beat at the position despite Casas not facing big league pitching for months.
