The Boston Red Sox have been far from the best team in baseball this season, as they've put up a 28-29 record through their first 57 games.
Boston didn't spend much in the offseason, signing Lucas Giolito and Cooper Criswell as their big free-agent acquisitions and trading for Tyler O'Neill.
On top of that, the talent that the Red Sox do have on the roster has dealt with injuries. Giolito, Trevor Story and Garrett Whitlock are done for the year. O'Neill, Triston Casas, Masataka Yoshida, Nick Pivetta and Brayan Bello have all had stints on the injured list.
Despite this, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy has called out the team for underperforming in a recent interview on WEEI.
“We need to continue to pitch the way we have and start getting guys on base and scoring more runs," Kennedy said Thursday morning (transcribed by Boston.com) "But I don’t think we’ve over-performed. I think, if anything, we’ve under-performed just given the talent and the competitiveness in that clubhouse.”
This is what this roster should be. There's a bunch of young, inexperienced players filling full-time or rotational roles for the first time.
If the Red Sox wanted better results, that's something ownership and the front office would've had to pay for in the offseason.
Instead, this is a team with one true star and a bunch of players trying to figure out their roles on the team and in the league.
