Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas returned from his fourth-month absence last week, forcing the team to make a decision on the roster, and they opted to designate first baseman Dom Smith for assignment.
Then, after the 29-year-old cleared waivers, the Red Sox released him on Tuesday.
Smith joined the Red Sox this year to split time at first base with Garrett Cooper while Casas was out due to injury. He eventually won the job and was playing well down the stretch.
In 83 games with Boston, Smith hit .237 with a .706 OPS, six home runs and 34 RBIs. Over the final 35 games, he hit .284 with an .845 OPS, three home runs and 12 RBIs.
After the news was announced that the team officially released Smith, the first baseman took to social media and posted a simple, sweet farewell to the fans in Boston that he said he felt so connected to.
Smith's tenure with the Red Sox may have been short, but he'll always be welcomed back in Boston.
