The Boston Red Sox could have as many as 11 players from their 2024 roster hitting free agency this offseason, including relief pitcher Luis Garcia.
Garcia, 37, joined the Red Sox in the middle of the season when chief baseball officer Craig Breslow acquired him from the Los Angeles Angels for a package of four prospects (Niko Kavadas, Matthew Lugo, Yeferson Vargas and Ryan Zeferjahn).
Prior to the move, Garcia had posted a 3.71 ERA and a 1.168 WHIP with an 8.2 K/9 in 45 appearances (43 2/3 innings) for Los Angeles. He was much worse after, posting an 8.22 ERA and a 1.630 WHIP with a 7.6 K/9 in 15 appearances (15 1/3 innings).
Now, Garcia is set to hit the market again, and according to Spotrac, he's projected to receive a one-year deal worth just $1.04 million.
Spotrac compared his production to Ryan Brasier (two-year, $9 million), Joakim Soria (one-year, $3.5 million), Chris Martin (two-year, $13.5 million) and Jesse Chaves (one-year, $740,000).
While bringing him back for 2025 is certainly affordable, Boston will likely want to wash their hands of that poor transaction after his horrendous stint in 2024.
