The Boston Red Sox have given a number of rookies their first opportunity in the big leagues this season, including first baseman/catcher Mickey Gasper.
The 28-year-old has torn up Triple-A this season, hitting .367 with a 1.062 OPS, eight home runs, 36 RBIs and a stolen base for Worcester which has resulted in multiple stints with Boston.
But despite playing in 11 games for the Red Sox this year, he's yet to record his first major league hit. As of Friday, Gasper is 0-for-12 with three walks, one hit-by-pitch and five strikeouts.
Gasper says that stress isn't getting to him yet.
“I feel like it doesn’t change what I have to do up at the plate,” Gasper said (via. MassLive) “I have to hit the ball hard and find some grass. I’m not thinking about that when I go up there, or whenever my next opportunity is. I know how AC (Alex Cora) works and everybody’s always available at any time, so I think in that moment, I’m thinking more about what I can do to help the team, to help us win.
“Obviously, I want to get hits and I want to perform at a high level. But if the time comes and I get up there and they need a ground ball to second base to move a runner over, I’m going to be more than happy to get that job done. I don’t think it changes a whole lot for me.”
Gasper has put all of his effort and thoughts into focusing on the team and trying to help them win any way he can.
“I’m always ready to play,” he said, “and I’m thanking God every second that I’m here, enjoying the moment. I think that any chance I get to play and put on the uniform, whether it’s 0-for-4 or 4-for-4, it’s a great day at the ballpark.”
There's just one more series left in Boston's 2024 campaign, and with so much talent expected to join the roster in 2025, this weekend may be Gasper's last chance to accomplish the feat with the Red Sox.
