Devising a draft strategy in an auction draft is a rather difficult task. There are plenty of options that can provide starter-level production on your fantasy team. Of the 50 or so receivers who should be on your radar as a potential WR1, WR2, or WR3, you have to hone in on just a handful of receivers to target with (reasonable) aggression.

DOMINATE YOUR DRAFT: 2024 Fantasy Football Cheat Sheet

This could not be more different from your typical snake draft, where drafters are confined by ADP, and there are only so many receivers who are available to them in each draft slot.

Separating wide receivers into tiers can be helpful when trying to evaluate a large pool of receivers. Understanding which receivers you value at a similar level can help prevent you from spending too much on a particular player.

For most rosters, it makes sense to grab players from a variety of tiers. Blowing your budget on a few top-tier guys will lead to your team relying on the performance of $1 or $2 players when bye weeks come around or the injury bug strikes. There are inexpensive players who pay off each year, but leaving your draft with plans to regularly utilize these players will likely lead to disappointment.

On the other side of the coin, failing to grab a top-10 option and scooping up multiple WR2 options will likely create a headache each week when trying to set your lineup. Unless one of the players you select ascends into the upper tiers, you will be looking at a handful of players with middling production. Trying to pick from three or four players who project to perform as the WR15-30 is an incredibly frustrating task that often leads to regrets.

Regardless of how you plan to build your wide receiver corps, the biggest mistake that you can make is going into the draft without a general idea of which players you want to target. Reviewing projected player prices is the best way to get a feel for how receivers will be valued in your draft. From there, you can make a plan for your budget, not just for wide receivers, but for your team as a whole.
