When the USA took home a bronze medal in men's gymnastics at the 2008 Olympics, they ended with the pommel horse. Alexander "Sasha" Artemev scored 15.350 in his lone event of the team competition to clinch a second consecutive medal for the American men.

The 2024 edition of Team USA achieved the same honor 16 years later in a near-identical situation.

The United States put together a superb effort throughout the team competition Monday. They demonstrated clean execution and outperformed their qualifying scores by avoiding the slips and falls that plagued them early in the tournament.

Still, the USA entered the final rotation with a tenuous grasp on third place. The team needed to have a quality rotation on the pommel horse to guarantee a medal.

Paul Juda and Brody Malone got the United States off to a good start with solid scores. Then, event specialist Stephen Nedoroscik — competing in his first event of the day, like Artemev in 2008 — logged a 14.866 to clinch a podium spot for the USA.

Nedoroscik's finish marked the end of a 16-year medal drought in team competition for the USA and put them in the history books as one of the United States' best men's gymnastics teams of all time.

Here's what to know about the country's history in the men's gymnastics team competition at the Olympics.

Has the USA ever won a men's gymnastics team medal?

Yes, the United States has won team competition medals at the Olympics. The country entered the 2024 Olympics with six to its name, so the USA's bronze medal in Paris will be its seventh.

Last USA men's gymnastics team medal at the Olympics

The United States last earned a medal in the men's team competition at the Olympics in 2008. They won bronze at the Beijing Games when Jonathan Horton and Justin Spring combined to power the USA into third place, 1.2500 points ahead of Germany.

The 2008 Americans put together the second-highest team total on the horizontal bar and the third-highest on the rings to guarantee them a spot on the podium. They couldn't quite catch gold medalist China or silver medalist Japan after posting bottom-two team totals on the floor and pommel horse.

Still, the U.S. team was celebrated for their achievement, and it was one that the three subsequent iterations of Team USA strived for before the 2024 team's bronze medal.
