Olympics gymnastics medals count: Updated standings of gold, silver, bronze winners at 2024 Paris Games image

Gymnastics is one of the most competitive sports at the Olympics year in and year out, and with good reason. The world's elite gymnasts all post very high scores in their events.

As a result, the difference between winning a medal or finishing off the podium is often just fractions of a point. That makes every tiny slip, stumble, fall or grab a critical deduction.

The USA is often among the top contenders in women's gymnastics — it is going for its third team gold medal in the last four Olympics — and Simone Biles figures to clean up the competition at the 2024 Olympics. She is in great form and is out to prove that her battle with the twisties at the 2021 Tokyo Games was a blip on the radar.

Meanwhile, the U.S. men's team is seeking their first podium since 2008. They didn't have the best qualifying run, as Brody Malone shockingly failed to qualify for the all-around competition, but the team entered the competition viewed as a potential bronze medal contender if all went well.

Plenty of other countries have quality gymnastics programs as well. Russia may not be allowed at the 2024 Olympics, but China and Japan figure to put together strong runs both in men's and women's competition while Brazil and Italy may fight for medals on the women's side.

Which country will take home the most gold medals in gymnastics? Here's what to know about the 14 gold medals (and 42 overall) up for grabs in Paris.
