San Francisco 49ers fans and those who own Christian McCaffrey in fantasy football are hard-pressed for good news about the NFL superstar these days.
Sports Illustrated fantasy football analyst Michael Fabiano had grim news about McCaffrey’s Achilles tendinitis on Wednesday night after communicating with medical experts familiar with the league.
“If you have Christian McCaffrey remorse and regret, you’re probably gonna have it for another few weeks,” Fabiano said in a video posted to X. “Not gonna play this week, at least he’s a long shot according to Ian Rapoport.”
Fabiano went on to say that he texted Dr. David Chao and Dr. Jesse Morse about the injury, and neither had an encouraging outlook on it.
According to Chao, Achilles tendinitis makes McCaffrey susceptible to rupturing his Achilles and ending his season if he returns too early.
Morse added that even if McCaffrey is ready to return, he could have to manage discomfort.
That makes Niners running back Jordan Mason’s Week 1 success a double-edged sword for fans.
Mason rushed 28 times for 147 yards and a touchdown in a dominant win over the New York Jets, which will make it much easier for San Francisco to play it safe with McCaffrey’s return.
The Niners also have the luxury of having several other offensive weapons like Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle to manage his absence in the interim.
But it doesn’t make life any easier for McCaffrey’s fantasy owners.
