The San Francisco 49ers are predicted to be one of the best teams in the National Football League for the 2024 season. However, most news about the team has centered around contract negotiations.
The 49ers have been trying to figure out the contract situation with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who wants a contract that matches the other star receivers in the league. He has gone so far as to not participate in training camp, instead opting to sit and watch on the sidelines.
However, Aiyuk isn't the only star San Francisco player who was absent from drills. According to a report from The Athletic's Matt Barrows, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said left tackle Trent Williams did not report for training camp for contract-related reasons. He will face a $50,000 fine for each practice he misses.
Recently named as one of the best players in the NFL by Pro Football Focus, Williams is arguably the most important part of the 49ers' offense. An 11-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro selection, Williams leads the offensive line in protecting quarterback Brock Purdy and opening lanes for running back Christian McCaffrey.
While many would argue that his age is an issue, Williams has shown no signs of slowing down at 36, going so far as to be ranked as the second-best player over 30, right behind the Miami Dolphins' Tyreek Hill.
In its current state, the 49ers look like one of the best teams in the NFL. If they want to capitalize on last season's momentum and win the Super Bowl this year, they absolutely need Williams on the offensive line.
