While the San Francisco 49ers are predicted to be one of the best teams in the National Football League, most of the media's focus has been on the organization's contract difficulties.
Veteran offensive tackle Trent Williams recently made headlines by holding out of training camp for contractual reasons. However, the most vocal player has been wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
Aiyuk has publicly criticized San Francisco for not wanting to pay him the same amount as other receivers of his caliber. This has led to the second-team All-Pro to reportedly request a trade to another team.
This hasn't stopped his peers from recognizing his ability. Aiyuk was recently ranked 66th in NFL.com's Top 100 Players of 2024, a ranking voted on by players in the NFL.
"After his best season, Aiyuk appears on the Top 100 list for the first time," Christian Gonzales said. "He led the talented 49ers offense with 1,342 receiving yards, which was seventh in the league. Aiyuk also ranked second amongst his peers with 17.9 yards per reception. Having unsuccessfully sought an extension, Aiyuk has requested to be traded. Though his future in the Bay Area is uncertain, his past season drew high ranks from his peers."
With a potentially record-breaking Brock Purdy contract extension coming up in 2025, it's clear that San Francisco is trying to manage their finances the best they can. Hopefully, they see the value of keeping a talented receiver like Aiyuk on the roster.
