Eagles could use someone with Saleh's expertise on defense

Robert Saleh has said he doesn’t want another coaching job this season, per Michael Silver, after Saleh was fired Tuesday by the New York Jets.

While speculation persists the move came because Aaron Rodgers intervened to prevent Saleh from firing Nathaniel Hackett, or that it happened two days after Saleh wore a heritage-embracing Lebanese patch on the sidelines, speculation also continues what he might actually do next. This season, or next.

And while the Philadelphia Eagles have their own coaching concerns, it’s worth considering if they have a need for Saleh right now. Not necessarily as a replacement for Nick Sirianni, but rather in a supporting role for a team coming off a bye week and looking to improve on a slow 2-2 start. If that were to happen, Mekhi Becton would need to adjust.

Anything Saleh would have to contribute as a defensive-minded coach could help the Eagles, who rank 27th in defense in the NFL. Saleh and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio go way back, when Saleh interned for Fangio was defensive coordinator of the Houston Texans in 2005.

While Saleh’s Jets struggled on both sides of the ball for consistency so far, it’s worth noting he started Zach Wilson for 33 games, 10 more than his other starters in Mike White, Rodgers, Joe Flacco, Trevor Siimian, and Tim Boyle put together.

The Eagles seem to have better overall personnel that that on defense, though Jordan Davis, Brandon Graham, and Darius Slay have underperformed as the overall unit ranks No. 23 in the NFL according to Pro Football Focus. Graham, at No. 50 overall, is the lone Eagle in PFF’s top 50 overall individual defender rankings.
