The New York Giants are less than two weeks away from the start of 2024 training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford.
The quarterback position will be a hot topic of conversation for the Giants as Daniel Jones recovers from a torn ACL that ended his rough season prematurely in 2023.
Jones is under contract for the next three seasons, but the Giants technically have an out in his contract that would involve the team taking on a $22.21 million dead cap hit if they decide to move in a different direction after 2024. It's a dead-cap hit of $11.11 million if the Giants wait until after 2025.
Entering the third season under head coach Brian Daboll, the Giants have been on both sides of the playoff fence. They surprisingly made it to the divisional round in 2022 but regressed terribly due to injuries and poor play in 2023.
Before training camp arrives, we'll be previewing each position group for the Giants. From highlighting the new additions to projecting the depth chart, we'll have you covered on everything pertaining to the position.
We start with the quarterback position.
2024 Giants training camp preview: Quarterback
Daniel Jones' recovery
The biggest storyline for the Giants will be the future of the quarterback position, and it revolves all around Jones. In order for his game to be evaluated, though, he has to be on the field. Jones spent most of the spring rehabbing from surgery to repair his torn ACL, progressing to 7-on-7 drills at OTAs.
While Jones didn't participate in any 11-on-11 drills this spring, it's expected that the $40 million quarterback will be ready to go when the team returns for training camp. Whether they will give him his full workload right away remains to be seen.
Either way, Jones will be the biggest focal point for fans and media members as both he and the team face a crucial season.
Offseason additions and departures
With Jones returning in the second of a four-year deal, the Giants needed to find a quality backup in free agency. Tyrod Taylor opted to sign with the New York Jets this offseason so the Giants went a different route, bringing in Drew Lock on a one-year deal.
With Tommy DeVito returning as well, the Giants have been pretty set in the quarterback room this offseason. They also claimed Nathan Rourke off waivers later in the offseason, but he projects to be mostly a camp body.
Key position battle at quarterback
While some analysts may hope to see Lock take over for Jones, that's unlikely to happen. There is a clear pecking order with Jones at the top of the depth chart and Lock being the backup behind him. Because of this, there isn't really an intriguing position battle taking place at quarterback.
The only true battle is between DeVito and Rourke for the No. 3 quarterback role, but that one seems pretty inconsequential. DeVito is the favorite to win the QB3 job entering camp, and it will be interesting to see how many quarterbacks they carry on the active roster.
Giants' projected Week 1 quarterback depth chart
Rounding out the preview is a projection of the depth chart at quarterback, but it's pretty cut and dry.
Starter: Daniel Jones
Backup: Drew Lock
Depth: Tommy DeVito (practice squad)
As long as Jones is fully healthy going into the regular season and Lock has a handle on the offense, the Giants should keep two quarterbacks on the active roster. It may be risky to send DeVito through waivers, but the Giants will need depth elsewhere on the roster.
