The New York Giants brought in quarterback Drew Lock in free agency as a backup option to starter Daniel Jones this offseason.
Though Jones is working his way back from a torn ACL, he is expected to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Still, the Giants wanted to get a viable spot-starting option in the event Jones wasn't ready for the start of the season.
Lock signed a one-year deal worth $5 million in free agency. His contract includes an additional $3 million in incentive, and we now know what those look like.
According to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team, here are the contract incentives for Lock:
Drew Lock contract incentives
- 40% of snaps: $250,000
- 50% of snaps: $250,000
- 60% of snaps: $250,000
- 70% of snaps: $250,000
- 55% of snaps + playoffs: $500,000
- 70% of snaps + playoffs: $500,000
- 92.5 or greater passer rating (min. 224 attempts): $250,000
- 65% or greater completion percentage (min. 224 attempts): $250,000
- 15+ TD passes and 88.0 passer rating or greater (min. 224 attempts): $250,000
- 2,000+ passing yards and 88.0 passer rating (min. 224 attempts): $250,000
Lock only has one season as a starter, and that came in 2020 when he started 13 games. He completed 57.3% of his passes for 2,933 yards, 16 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a 75.4 passer rating.
If all goes according to plan with Jones' ACL recovery, Lock won't have the chance to obtain his incentives. But it does give him the motivation to prove he's worthy competition for the starting role during training camp.
