There's no question as to whether or not Davante Adams would upgrade any team's receiving corps, but the New York Jets may be able to find a similar spark from within.
Although his achievements don't match those of Adams, veteran wide receiver Mike Williams has performed at a high level against quality NFL defenses. The Jets signed Williams as a free agent this past offseason, but he's needed time to completely rebound from the torn ACL he suffered with the Los Angeles Chargers early last season.
"Mike didn't do a whole lot in training camp, and you saw some glimpses here and there, but I just think he's getting more comfortable," said quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Friday in London.
After nine snaps and no targets in the season opener, Williams built up to a season-high 43 snaps in Week 4 against the Denver Broncos. He has taken at least 33 offensive reps in each of the past three games.
"It's been good to see Mike come to life," said head coach Robert Saleh earlier this week as the team prepares for an NFL International Series game against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings.
Williams enjoyed his most productive day yet in the September 29 setback against the Broncos. Targeted five times by Rodgers, the former first-round draft pick made four receptions for a game-high 67 yards.
"The more comfortable he gets the more plays and opportunities he's going to get, so I'm really proud of him. He handles himself really well," said Rodgers. "When he's gotten opportunities, he's made plays."
If his first catch as a Jet is a harbinger, there will be good times ahead. Williams converted a 2nd-and-16 situation with a beautiful 19-yard gain that extended the go-ahead fourth-quarter drive in a 24-17 road win over the Tennessee Titans.
The 30-year-old Williams, the No. 7 overall selection at the 2017 NFL Draft, has a 15.6 yards per catch career average. He accounted for two 1,000-yard receiving campaigns with the Chargers.
