It looked like the inevitable outcome for the New York Jets, and, unfortunately, it was.
The Jets officially placed starting edge rusher Jermaine Johnson on Injured Reserve, four days after the 2022 first-round draft pick ruptured his Achilles in a Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans. In addition to giving Johnson an IR tag, New York made a roster move prior to its Thursday Night Football home opener against the New England Patriots.
Filling the roster spot vacated by Johnson, the Jets signed defensive end Jalyn Holmes off of the Practice Squad. The team also designated linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball as a gameday P-Squad elevation, which likely hints that veteran linebacker CJ Mosley will be unavailable on Thursday. Mosley, who was deemed questionable to play, is battling a big toe injury suffered in the Week 2 win.
The 28-year-old Holmes appeared in each of the first two games as a P-Squad elevation. He logged 16 snaps on defense in the opener and 15 more defensive reps in the win over the Tennessee Titans.
In two games, Holmes has four combined tackles, including one hit for a loss. The 2018 fourth-round draft pick initially joined the Jets' as a Practice Squad player in 2023, proceeding to appear in five games.
Now on the active roster, Holmes joins a depleted defensive ends rotation that is missing Johnson along with Haason Reddick, who is still holding out over a contract dispute. Johnson, a 2023 Pro Bowl selection, made four tackles before losing the remainder of his season to a torn Achilles.
The Jets host the Patriots for an 8:15 pm ET kickoff on September 19. Amazon Prime will carry the game live.
