The New York Jets have signed two Practice Squad players to their active 53-man roster ahead of the Monday Night Football opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
With versatile offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer and, subsequently, linebacker Zaire Barnes going onto Injured Reserve, two roster holes opened up in the lead-up to Week 1. The Jets filled those spots on Monday by promoting interior offensive lineman Jake Hanson and veteran linebacker Sam Eguavoen.
Hanson and Eguavoen both saw regular season game action for New York during the 2023 campaign. They competed throughout training camp this past summer, but were released on cutdown day and subsequently signed to P-Squad deals.
The Jets also officially announced the addition of former Minnesota Vikings' fourth-round draft pick Kene Nwangwu to the team's Practice Squad. The All-Pro kick returner reportedly worked out for Gang Green last week.
The 27-year-old Hanson entered the NFL as a sixth-round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers in 2020. He totaled 11 regular season appearances for Green Bay over the course of the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
The Packers waived Hanson after training camp in 2023 and he landed with the Jets on a P-Squad deal as injury insurance on November 6. The Oregon product proceeded to join the active roster and play seven games down the stretch, including four starts at right guard.
Eguavoen joined the Jets in 2023 after four seasons as a Miami Dolphins' core special teamer. The undrafted Texas Tech product played 66 games during his Dolphins' tenure.
Initially beginning the 2023 campaign on New York's Practice Squad, Eguavoen wound up making 15 appearances. The 30-year-old total 305 special teams snaps in his first season with the Green & White.
The IR designation for Schweitzer and Barnes means they'll be out for no fewer than four weeks.
