The New York Jets welcomed two offensive players back to practice on Tuesday while a defensive back left the field due to an apparent injury in Florham Park.
Second-year wide receiver, and primary return specialist, Xavier Gipson participated for the first time since July 25 when he limped off with a leg injury.
"It was good to get him back. He had a really nice third down conversion, catching the ball in the slot and drop-stepping and getting vertical," said fourth-year head coach Robert Saleh. "He took a big step I felt like in OTAs, but the expectation for all our guys is to show up every day, find ways to get better, and have a mindset to be their best every day."
In addition to Gipson, starting left tackle Tyron Smith returned to position drills after sitting out Saturday's scrimmage and Monday's practice. The 33-year-old Smith, who is on a maintenance schedule, did not compete in team drills on Tuesday.
"We're just going to work him back in," said Saleh, who emphasized that Smith is "on our timeline."
On Monday, Saleh reported that the eight-time Pro Bowl tackle, who has struggled to stay healthy in recent years, was experiencing "tightness."
During the training camp session, which was open to media, veteran safety Ashtyn Davis, who is also a core special teamer, was seen exiting the field. Davis, a 2020 third-round draft pick, re-signed with the Jets this past offseason.
"He got hit in the ribs, so we just took him in just to get the evaluation on that," said Saleh.
The Jets will practice again in Florham Park on Wednesday but will no longer permit ticketed spectators due to a forecast of inclement weather. New York will host an open practice on August 20 instead.
