The New York Jets made five changes to their 90-man training camp roster on Friday morning, announcing the signing of three players while releasing two undrafted rookies.
In addition to bringing former UFL wide receiver Isaiah Winstead aboard, a move that was reported on Thursday evening, the Jets signed fellow spring league pass-catcher Brandon Smith and former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tre Swilling. To open up the necessary roster spots, New York sent wide receiver Marcus Riley and tight end Kevin Foelsch packing.
At the WR position, second-year pro Xavier Gipson is temporarily sidelined with a leg injury while veteran Allen Lazard was limited during Wednesday's practice as a result of "camp soreness." In the secondary, the Jets saw cornerback Brandin Echols return while slot option Michael Carter II was banged up in Practice No. 7.
The Jets are the fifth different NFL organization willing to give Swilling an opportunity since the Georgia Tech product went undrafted in 2022. The 25-year-old cornerback appeared in two regular season games with the 49ers in 2022 and has been a Practice Squad player for the Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens.
Swilling was most recently with the Ravens until the club waived him on July 22. He made 40 starts during his collegiate career in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Smith has been trying to break onto an NFL roster since coming out of Iowa in 2020. The wide receiver has had cups of coffee with the Arizona Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys but has yet to make his regular season debut.
The 25-year-old Smith landed in the UFL this past spring and made nine starts for the DC Defenders. He totaled 210 yards and two touchdowns on 18 receptions.
