The New York Giants defense took a major hit this week.
Though the injury does not appear to be long-term, edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux underwent surgery to repair a fractured scaphoid bone in his wrist, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters Wednesday afternoon that Thibodeaux is considered week-to-week as he recovers from surgery.
This is a big blow to the Giants defense — a unit that enters Week 6 as the leaders in sacks across the entire NFL.
Thibodeaux has enjoyed a solid start to his third season. According to Next Gen Stats, he ranks 25th in quarterback pressures (17) and 21st in quick pressures under three seconds (8).
With the Giants needing to fill a void on the edge opposite Brian Burns, it's likely they will turn to Azeez Ojulari. The former second-round pick has seven quarterback pressures and one sack on the season in a limited role.
The Giants will need all the pass rush they can get when Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals come to town, which means Dexter Lawrence and Brian Burns have to step up even more than they have in prime time.
